Speech Communication Center
What we do
The Speech Communication Center is dedicated to providing free student/community support through quality tutoring and mentoring in the areas of Public Speaking and the Communication discipline.
The Center offers the following services:
- Tutoring for any individual or group oral presentation in any discipline
- Topic Selection
- Speech Outlining
- Speech Development
- Speech Content
- Speech Research
- Speech Organization
- Speech Delivery
- Speech Rehearsal
- Tutoring in any Communication Course
- A friendly, stress free environment where Communication Changes Everything.
We have a number of resources at that location including a T.V./VCR combo, video camera, course texts, etc. so that you can video tape your speech and review it or just receive one-on-one help in your Communication course. Even if you're not in a Communication course, we would be glad to help you with any individual or group oral presentation for any class or event.
Center Hours
Located in IC 200 (just above the library on the second floor), in the same location as The Writing Center.
Monday 10:15 p.m - 3:15 p.m.
Tuesday 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Wednesday 10:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Thursday 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Friday 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Walk-ins welcome during daytime hours, however scheduled appointments are appreciated. It is recommended to email Speechcenter@otc.edu 24 hours in advance to schedule an appointment.
Evening hours are also available on Tuesday/Thursday from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM, by appointment only. Please email Speechcenter@otc.edu at least 24 hours in advance to schedule an appointment for these evening hours (a confirmation email will be sent in response to shown if we can accomodate your request for an appointment).
What to Bring
If you're visiting the Speech Communication Center for a specific assignment, please bring the following materials:
- Detailed Instructions on the Assignment (provided by your Instructor)
- Instructor's Name
- Course Name, Number & Section
- List of Questions (If you have specific questions, please write them down so we can discuss them when you arrive)
- Any supplemental materials for the assignment provided by your instructor (example of a good outline, etc.)
- Any previous drafts/work on the assignment
Other materials that you might want to bring:
- DVD-R or VHS-C if you want to tape a speech and take a copy home
- Flashdrive, especially if you're developing a PowerPoint or working on a computer file
- Course Textbook if you want tutoring on a certain chapter/concept in a Communication Course
Instructions for logging on to the Speech Communication Center’s Blackboard Site
- To gain access to the Speech Communication Center site, access your Blackboard account and click on the "Courses" tab at the top of the student welcome screen.
- Next click on the Organizations folder listed under the "Course Catalog".
- Then click on the "enroll" tab to the far right of the Speech Communication Center (OTC-SCC) course site listing.
- Clicking submit on the next screen will complete the enrollment and direct you into the organizations site.
