Federal Work Study Program

Federal Work-study (FWS) is a campus-based federal financial aid program. The FWS program provides part-time jobs for students who have demonstrated "need", according to the results from their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), allowing students to earn money to help pay their education expenses. Funding for the FWS program is limited, and positions are filled through an interview process. Students are encouraged to apply early if they are interested in this program.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
STUDENTS MUST:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year for which they wish to be considered for FWS.
  • Demonstrate financial need, determined by the FAFSA results.
  • Be enrolled in a least 6 credit hours during the Fall and Spring semesters and at least 3 credit hours during the Summer semester to remain eligible to work.
  • Be degree seeking at OTC

APPLICATION, INTERVIEW, HIRING AND PAYROLL PROCESS:

  1. Request Work-Study Eligibility & Contract
    • Upon request, actual eligibility will be determined. If you want to see if Federal Work-Study is already on your financial aid awards, please check your Financial Aid Status by Term in your MyOTC account.
    • Students selected for verification will be reviewed for eligibility once verification is complete and financial aid awards finalized.
    • Contract will only be issued if the student meets eligibility requirements.
    • The contract maximum hours per week will be either 10 or 15 depending on student’s eligibility.
    • Students selecting Student Services as a pick up location will receive an e-mail notification when your correspondence is available.
  2. Interview Procedures
    • Students must have a work-study contract before requesting an interview.
    • View positions online at the link below.
    • Contact the supervisor of the positions you’re interested in and request an interview.
    • Prepare for the interview with a copy of your class schedule, previous work history, and remember to dress appropriately.
    • Take your contract to your interview; this lets the supervisor know you are eligible for work-study.
  3. Hiring Procedures
When you have been hired, you must:
    • Complete Parts 2 & 3 on the back of the work-study contract.
    • Have your Supervisor complete Part 1 on the back of the work-study contract.
    • Complete direct deposit and employment forms with Human Resources.
    • Human Resources will forward your contract to the Financial Aid Office.
    • You may begin work once you and your supervisor have been notified by email from the Financial Aid Office.
    • Failure to complete all steps in the hiring process will result in a delay in receiving your paycheck.
    • Your supervisor will work out the details of appropriate dress and establishing working hours.
  4. Payment for work performed:

Students employed through the FWS program will be paid by direct deposit into a checking or savings account.  Students earn $7.00 per hour and get paid on the 15th of each month, unless the date falls on a weekend, when the pay date will be on Friday if the 15th falls on a Saturday and on Monday if the 15th falls on a Sunday. Time sheets begin on the 1st work day of the month and end on the last work day of the month. Work study time sheets must be turned in at Student Services on the first work day of the month.
