Society for the Awareness of the Natural Environment (SANE)
Society for the Awareness of the Natural Environment
The mission of SANE is to provide environmental awareness to the community through information and student activism.
Activism means: To participate in stream team clean-ups, frequent camping and hiking trips to get a better understanding of nature and what a functional ecosystem should look like. To participate in community events designed to improve the local ecology. To team up with other environmental organizations, i.e. James River Basin Partnership, The Watershed Committee, and the Sierra Club, to make a difference through grass roots efforts.
Information would include: Informational pamphlets concerning changes in the local environment. Provide information on how to start a recycling program, nearest recycling centers, and waste that can and cannot be recycled. To provide information about the advantages and disadvantages of alternative energy resources. To help students understand and define what sustainability means. To inform students on environment in the political arena.
Advantages: Students who have participated in the club in the past have moved on to gain jobs in the Environmental Sector. Many of the community events introduce students to influential people within the community. Participation in a civic organization is always favorable on a resume.
