2009 Disaster Tax Credit

2009 Midwestern Disaster Area Tax Credit

You may qualify for an education tax credit if you attended college in a Midwestern Disaster Area during 2008 or 2009.  A key component is where you attended college, not where you reside.

A Midwestern disaster area is an area for which a major disaster was declared by the President of the United States during 2008 or 2009.

The cost of attendance allowances for Ozarks Technical Community College during the 2009 year are given below and vary depending on whether the student is independent or dependent (had to provide parental income on FAFSA or do not meet the definition of independent student as defined by the U.S. Department of Education).

Dependent Student room and board allowance is $2,625
Independent Student room and board allowance is $5,807

For more information from the Internal Revenue Service regarding the Midwestern Disaster Areas please see IRS publication 4492-B (Rev. January 2010).  Specific information regarding the above is found on pages 8 and 9 of the publication.
