Improve Dental Radiology Skills

This course will provide an understanding of the fundamentals of Dental Radiology.  In addition, hands-on application will enhance and improve radiographic skills used in dentistry, including working with digital sensors while using the bisecting and paralleling techniques. This course satisfies the Missouri Dental Board CE requirements. (CE 7 hours)  Limited to 12 participants.

Online Dental Assisting ReviewThis review course is conducted entirely online via OTC’s Blackboard learning system.  Once you enroll, you will have 8 weeks to complete the self-paced course.  Topics to be reviewed are: Oral Disease Prevention; Dental Materials; Medical Emergencies; Charts, Legal, Jurisprudence; Radiation Health & Safety; Infection Control; Tooth Morphology.
All you need to participate is access to a computer with an internet connection, plus a reliable email account, which must be provided at the time of registration.  Please check your emails frequently.  Your login information to the online course will be provided through your email account.  You may enroll at any time.

Hybrid - Restorative Expanded Functions I

The following expanded functions will be reviewed in the online didactic course. At the clinical course, dentist trainers will teach these skills to assistants, who then will be assessed and must show competency in order to receive the certificate of completion. Must bring original Missouri Basic Skills Certificate or CDA Certificate to class. Students who arrive at class without this original Certificate will not be allowed to attend the class. There are no refunds for this class for any reason.

Hybrid class materials are accessed online and skills assessment takes place on campus.

o Prerequisite to Restorative II
o Sizing and cementing of prefabricated crowns;
o Placing, condensing, and carving amalgam for Class I, V, and VI restorations;
o Placing composite for Class I, V, and VI restorations; and
o Minor palliative care of dental emergencies (place sedative filling).

Infection Control

This course will provide an understanding of effective infection control procedures. Review of OSHA regulations and CDC uidelines based on the MMWR will be discussed. Additional topics include disease transmission, universal precuations, disinfection and sterilization procedures, PPE waterline and eyewash safety, immunizations, Needlestick Safety Act, managment of waste and sharps, proper hand-washing, spore testing, and use of barriers to prevent cross contamination.

Hybrid Certification of Anesthesia for Dental Hygienist

This course is designed to prepare licensed dental hygienists to administer block & infiltration anesthesia. The course content includes the mechanism of action, local anesthetic agents, review of essential anatomy, armamentarium, vasoconstrictors and local and systemic effects and complications. In addition to the didactic session, participants will perform safe and effective local anesthesia administration techniques on their clinical partners under the supervision of qualified faculty. Students must pass a written exam with 80% or better and a skills assessment. This course meets the requirements of the Missouri Dental Board for certification in the administration of block and infiltration anesthesia in the practice of dental hygiene. (12 CE). Students will be required to bring proof of current BLS/CPR certification, dental hygiene license and liability insurance before entering the course. Student will need to bring disposable gowns or lab jacket, masks, gloves and safety glasses.  Registration required up until 2 weeks prior to beginning of class(1/25)

Hybrid Anesthetic Refresher for Dental Hygienist

This course is designed to refresh the licensed dental hygienist with techniques in administering block and infiltration anesthesia. In addition, the introduction of Oraquix© and Oraverse© agents will be presented. This course reviews the requirements of the Missouri Dental Board for certification in the administration of block and infiltration anesthesia in the practice of dental hygiene. 

 The online component reviews the anesthetic mechanism of action, local agents, essential anatomy, proper armamentarium, vasoconstrictors, clinical effects and complications. In addition to online component, participants will have the opportunity to refresh effective and current administration techniques on their clinical partners, under the direct supervision of qualified faculty.

 All participants are required to provide copies of the following to class:
      1.  Current CPR-BLS certification
      2.  Current RDH license
      3.  Proof of liability insurance

 All participants will receive an email stating their online access code.

o Removal of orthodontic bands and bonds;
o Final cementation of any permanent appliance or prosthesis;
o Making impressions for the fabrication of any removable or fixed prosthesis/appliance; and
o Placement and cementation of orthodontic brackets and/or bands

Hybrid - Fixed Prosthetics Expanded Functions

The following expanded functions will be reviewed in the online didactic course. At the clinical course, dentist trainers will teach these skills to assistants, who then will be assessed and must show competency in order to receive the certificate of completion. Must bring original Missouri Basic Skills Certificate or CDA Certificate to class. Students who arrive at class without this original Certificate will not be allowed to attend the class. o Place retraction cord in preparation for fixed prosthodontic impressions;
o Extra-oral adjustments of fixed prosthesis;
o Extra-oral adjustments of removable prosthesis during and after insertion;
o Final cementation of any permanent appliance or prosthesis; and
o Making impressions for the fabrication of any removable or fixed prosthesis/appliance

Nitrous Oxide for the Dental Hygienist & Dental Assistant

This course provides dental hygienists and assistants with necessary training to administer nitrous oxide conscious sedation and the dental assistant with the training and experience to assist in administration & monitoring nitrous oxide in the dental office. Hybrid Review for CDA Exam

One of the most commonly asked questions “How do I prepare for taking the CDA exam?”

This study series offers a comprehensive review of current material and concepts essential in preparing the candidate for the Dental Assisting National Board Exam (DANB).  The review is based on an analysis of the duties commonly performed in actual dental assisting practice and is a pathway to becoming an Expanded Function Dental Assistant.
1. General Chairside Review and Practice Exams (GCE);
o Collection and recording of data, dental and lab procedures, materials, patient education, and dental office emergency prevention and patient management.
2. Radiation Health & Safety Review and Practice Exams (RHS)
o Radiographic exposing, processing, evaluating, mounting, proper labeling and charting, radiation safety for both patient and operator.
3. Infection Control Review and Practice Exams (ICE)
o Healthcare provider and patient infection control education, cross-contamination and disease transmission prevention, maintaining dental and environmental asepsis, sterilization protocol and procedures, and occupational safety (OSHA) standards according to CDC guidelines.

Missouri Basic Skills and Expanded Functions Information

Prerequisites for an EFDA Course
Missouri rule states that to be eligible to take Expanded Function courses, assistants must have proof of certification as a Certified Dental Assistant or a Certified Orthodontics Assistant from the Dental Assisting National Board or proof of passing the Missouri Test of Basic Dental Assisting Skills  Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).  Successful completion of the CDA exam will lead to a national certification that is highly valued by both employers and patients.
