Why would I want to be an EMT-Paramedic?
The EMT-Paramedic is an option for the EMT-Basic who wants to expand basic knowledge for use in employment. Those who choose this option may include, but are not limited to:
- Member of company medical team.
- Emergency room personnel.
- Urgent care center personnel.
- Ambulance personnel.
- Company safety team member.
What do EMT-Paramedics do?
The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic is a key player in the emergency Medical Services team. Paramedics are educated to care for victims of sudden injury or illness. Their duties may include:
- Providing care for sick or injured people.
- Assessing symptoms of illness and injury.
- Splinting and bandaging.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Airway management.
- Intravenous medications.
- Recognition and management of heart conditions.
- Driving an ambulance to and from calls.
- Record keeping.
- Cleaning, stocking, and maintaining the ambulance.
Becoming a Paramedic requires education and dedication. A Paramedic must not only be able to treat all types of emergency patients, but also to comfort the mother of an injured child or communicate calmly with someone who is threatening suicide.
The work you will do as an EMT-Paramedic is demanding, yet satisfying, with the knowledge that you made a difference in the life of each person you treat. While not every call is life or death emergency, each and every patient you see will benefit from being treated by a well-educated and experienced Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.
