Why would I want to be an EMT-Basic?
Many like the broad base of medical knowledge available in the EMT-Basic course and its application in everyday life. There are a variety of jobs that utilize the information covered in the EMT-Basic course and those might include, but are not limited to:
- Company safety team member.
- Worker in public facilities.
- Day care center employee.
- Emergency room personnel.
- Ambulance personnel.
What do EMT-Basics do?
The Emergency Medical Technician-Basic is the backbone of the Emergency Medical Services team. EMT-Bs are trained to care for victims of sudden injury or illness. Their duties may include:
- Providing care for sick or injured people.
- Assessing symptoms of illness and injury
- Splinting.
- Bandaging.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Airway management.
- Driving an ambulance to and from calls.
- Record keeping.
- Cleaning, stocking, and maintaining the ambulance.
Becoming an EMT requires education and dedication. An EMT must not only be able to treat all types of emergency patients, but also to comfort the mother of an injured child or communicate calmly with someone who is threatening suicide.
The work you do as an EMT-Basic is demanding, yet satisfying, with the knowledge that you made a difference in the life of each person you treat. While not every call is a life-or-death emergency, each and every patient you see will benefit from being treated by a well-educated and experienced Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.
