GED FAQ
GED FAQ
Statistics show that on average, people with a GED or HS diploma make approximately $7,000 more a year than those that do not have a GED!!
What is the GED like?
The GED is a comprehensive, eight hour test over Reading, Math, Language (includes an essay), Social Studies and Science. It is recommended that a practice GED test is taken to determine if you are ready for the GED test. Practice tests can be taken at www.4tests.com or www.learnatest.com.
Should I attend classes?
Even if you plan on just sending in your GED application and taking the next available test, that process takes four to six weeks. In the meantime, you can attend free Adult Education classes to better prepare yourself to pass the first time. In class, you will work on only the subjects that pre-testing indicates you need to work on, take practice tests and work on your essay. There are several Adult Education classrooms throughout Springfield and surrounding cities and counties. Contact the main Adult Education office at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) at 417-447-8860 for class information and times.
What if I can only study at home?
Local bookstores have a variety of GED books that you can purchase for study material. If you have Internet access, you can study online at www.gedonlineclass.com. The GED Online program requires you to go to an Adult Education classroom to take an evaluation that sets you up in a study program, and return every three months for follow-up assessments.
How much does it cost to take the GED test?
The GED exams cost a total of $40.00. An application to the State Department of Education, along with a $20.00 money order, must be sent to the GED Office in Jefferson City. Applications can be picked up at the OTC Adult Education and Literacy office on the OTC Campus or you can download one from the internet at www.dese.mo.gov/divcareered. Another $20.00 is paid to the GED testing center.
Where do I take the GED test?
Springfield had two test sites: Missouri State University and Ozarks Technical Community College. Both test sites give the GED exams at least once a month. You can call the Testing Center at MSU at 417-836-5116 or the Testing Center at OTC at 417-447-6982 for test dates and additional information.
What is a Demographics Form?
The U.S. Demographics Form is required by the GED testing centers in order to schedule the test. It is a form that is used by the federal government to collect census data. The forms are available at all GED class sites. Please call 417-447-8860 for the learning center nearest you.
