Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Do you sometimes find yourself struggling with basic skills needed for work or school and need an instructor fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)?  OTC's Disabilities Services and  Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) have joined together to create an individualized program for deaf or hard of hearing students. Through this program you will have the opportunity to work on improving basic academic skills with an instructor who specializes in the area of education of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Improve Basic Skills

The Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (EDHH) class offers individualized instruction for learners interested in improving their basic skills in the areas of

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Applications

High School EquivalencyHSET Classes

Don't have your high school diploma, but would like to get your high school equivalency certificate?  In addition to AEL classes and tutoring, HSET classes are offered to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Each learner will be assessed individually to determine a course of study.  The service is a second chance for anyone age 17 or older and out of high school.

  • Classes are free to students.
  • Study at your own pace.
  • Computer assisted instruction is available.

College Course Tutoring

AEL also offers free peer and one-on-one tutoring sessions with an instructor who specializes in the education of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.  These tutoring sessions are designed to help deaf and hard of hearing students who are enrolled in college classes with their course work.  The goal is for students to achieve success within the post-secondary classroom.  Activities include journal writing, group instruction and independent study.
